Firstly to understand the attempt in bettering Folkestone through 'creative' outlets please visit the Creative Foundation website.
This Second Year technology project involved using a current unused dwelling on Tontine Street in Folkestone, Kent. and creating a programme that would fall in line with the current 'Creative Quarter' programmes.
The creative art I chose was that of photography but the purpose of the programme was:
a. To improve education in an area where education is not a priority by teaching the art of photography as well as providing lectures by successful photographers.
b. To aid the community members of Folkestone in appreciating their currently run down sea side town by 'Capturing Folkestone' through the camera lense.
Design of the space included a gallery space, lecture space, media resource space, a computer room, a printing room and a service area. The success of this spatial design can be found in the above plans and sections.
Another important aspect of the design was the controlled lighting of a. the gallery space and b. the lecture space. the lecture space was directly above the gallery space at the front of the building which would ordinarily have the sun on it for the majority of the day. However my proposal, influenced by Jean Nouvel's L'Institut du Monde Arabe facade where a system of shutters similar to those of a camera are used to control the entry of light into the building.
